Here the numerous routes - perhaps five hundred at Cuvier alone, a third of which are genuinely difficult - aren't measured by dozens or hundreds of meters. Our stones, only good for scrubbing cooking pans, as a certain Chamonix guide described them, are only a few meters tall... but that's what pleases us and makes for the excellence of this school of climbing. No need to deploy ropes, no need for long waits... we move rapidly from one to the other... here it is only a question of pure climbing... Pierre Allain, Alpinisme et Competition(1949)
I was psyched. My mind was just surging with incredible thoughts of certainty and confidence. I am going to take this competition by the scruff of the neck, and there is no way I am going to be beaten. Winning this competition means more to me than anything else in the world. No one wants it more and no one deserves it more. I am stronger than everyone else, I am fitter than everyone else, and I am better than everyone else. It is my destiny to win this competition, and I will win it.
Didier was sat beside me. There was no one else I would rather have been competing against in the final. I turned to him and we smiled.
